Countries by birth rate in 2008

I read last week that the Russian government is encouraging their people to have more sex. President Vlad the Impaler was even soliciting the assistance of the pop singing group Boyz to Men to encourage copulation among the masses. Of course, the story was happily reported by the main stream media, who love to report on anything to do with sex. But, there was no explanation for the motives behind the “push” from the Russians.

For that, one must do some research about birth rates and Soviet communist history. As it turns out, the Russians, like most modern nations are experiencing sub-replacement fertility rates. Birth rates are below the replacement rate. This should be good news to liberal minded Malthusians. Isn’t Mother Earth straining under the pressure of too many humans?

Actually, this is bad news for most modern societies, especially socialist welfare states. For an in depth explanation of the hazards of our current culture of death, I refer you to America Alone by Mark Steyn. As it turns out, welfare societies like Russia, most of Europe and the U.S. are top heavy with entitled retirees, disabled and “disadvantaged” folks. More young workers are needed to fund these programs, as well as to capitalize on new technologies.

Central banks around the world have printed money to escape the global financial crisis, and as Bloomberg reports, IMF data shows Russia added 570 metric tons in the past decade. Putin‘s fears that “the U.S. is endangering the global economy by abusing its dollar monopoly,” are clearly being taken seriously as the world’s largest oil producer turns black gold into hard assets. A lawmaker in Putin’s party noted, “the more gold a country has, the more sovereignty it will have if there’s a cataclysm with the dollar, the euro, the pound or any other reserve currency.”

Putin’s gold strategy fits in with his resource nationalism, statist agenda, as Bloomberg notes when Russia defaulted in 1998 it took 28 barrels of oil to buy one ounce of gold, was 11.5 barrels when Putin came to power and when in 2005 it had fallen to 6.5 barrels (less than half what it is now), he went all in, telling the central bank to buy.

A grand jury has indicted 10 physicians and 26 others in a New York City federal court on charges of trying to rip off automobile insurers to the tune of roughly $279 million, and making off with about $113 million.

As in many other recent healthcare fraud cases, physicians are not the ringmasters in this alleged criminal enterprise. Rather, the indictment, unsealed today, states that they are fronts and underlings for a cadre of nonphysicians, primarily “individuals of Russian descent” with Mafia-style nicknames like “Russian Mike,” “Fat Mike,” “Skinny Mike,” “KGB,” and “Nose.”

Part of Obama’s apparent war against U.S. energy independence includes a foreign-aid program that directly threatens my state’s sovereign territory. Obama’s State Department is giving away seven strategic, resource-laden Alaskan islands to the Russians. Yes, to the Putin regime in the Kremlin.

WASHINGTON, April 6 (UPI) — Russia has launched a long-term program for the next 12 years to boost its security forces and military presence in the resource-rich Arctic Ocean.

The Kremlin has plans to slowly assemble a collection of military and security units in the arctic region, but it has no intention of militarizing the arctic, a spokesman for the Russian Security Council told RIA Novosti March 27.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told RIA Novosti the Russian Security Council had published an official policy paper on its Web site titled “The fundamentals of Russian state policy in the Arctic up to 2020 and beyond.”
