The New York Times

The New York Times is the only newspaper that runs a “business” column not about how to get ahead economically, but rather about how to indoctrinate kids to feel guilty about being financially successful. At least that’s the theme of Ron Lieber‘s recent article, “An Invitation for High School Seniors to Write About Finances,” which calls for seniors to submit their college application essays that focus on finance to the New York Times for possible publication. How do high school seniors write exemplary essays about “finances,” exactly? One way is by concentrating their writing on corporate thugs like Bernie Madoff. Lieber states in his article: At Pitzer College, a student used the example of the Ponzi schemer Bernard L. Madoff to take a philosophical look at how much money people truly need to be happy. This, according to Angel Pérez, vice president and dean of admission and financial aid at Pitzer, makes for an excellent college application essay. “I think there is this new consciousness,” Pérez said. “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen.”

Santa Claus

A Georgia high school student was visited by police and suspended from school last week after posting on his Facebook profile: “Students of cchs ur in for a big surprise tomorrow ”John George, a sophomore at Crawford County High School, had made plans to dress up as Santa Claus and hand out candy at the school first thing in the morning. But parents and police officers who viewed the post took it as a threat in the wake of the horrific school shooting in Connecticut.“As soon as we got to school we were going to meet up in the bathroom and get dressed and then go to the gym and give out candy canes and chill with our other friends,” John told a local news station. But before he could carry out the plot, police arrived on the young man’s doorstep.

Teacher salaries at the high school average $72-78k. Apparently 50% of the students at the school are failing all of their classes, and the graduation rate is also under 50%. In an effort to turn the school around, the superintendent requested some changes be made whereby the school day would be slightly extended, teachers would perform some extra tutoring, etc.

The union balked and refused the terms, so now she is firing the entire teaching staff of the high school and replacing them. This is yet another example of unions digging their own graves by refusing to negotiate or accept reasonable terms. Sentiment is on the side of the superintendent, at least among the folks I have discussed the issue with.

Berkeley High May Cut Out Science Labs

Berkeley High School is considering a controversial proposal to eliminate science labs and the five science teachers who teach them to free up more resources to help struggling students.

Paul Gibson, an alternate parent representative on the School Governance Council, said that information presented at council meetings suggests that the science labs were largely classes for white students.
