The plan would give the government new powers to seize key companies whose failure jeopardizes the financial system, as well as creation of a watchdog agency to look out for consumers’ interests.
Reporting from Washington —
The Obama administration this week will propose the most significant new regulation of the financial industry since the Great Depression, including a new watchdog agency to look out for consumers’ interests.
Under the plan, expected to be released Wednesday, the government would have new powers to seize key companies — such as insurance giant American International Group Inc. — whose failure jeopardizes the financial system. Currently, the government’s authority to seize companies is mostly limited to banks.

In a story that hits a little too close to home, a U.S. history/government teacher in a Kansas high school was not offered a contract for 2009-2010 because of his refusal to bow to Obama.

Rep. Jane Harman and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano are old friends – but that isn’t stopping Harman from calling out Napolitano for slow-walking an agency review of the controversial use of military satellites in U.S. airspace.

Harman, the California Democrat who chairs a House subcommittee on domestic intelligence, wants Napolitano to kill the agency’s deceptively named National Applications Office, established by the Bush administration to funnel military intelligence to local, state and federal law enforcement.

Napolitano, herself a critic of George W. Bush-era warrantless wiretapping, has been sympathetic but says she needs more time to study the issue, which doesn’t sit well with the hard-driving Harman.

Take a little quiz to see if you fully understand the state of the world:

Question 3

True or False: The Muslim population of the United Kingdom is increasing 10 times faster than the general population.

Question 4

True or False: British banks have abolished piggy banks, as they might offend Muslims and police in Brussels are enjoined from eating doughnuts during Ramadan.

Question 5

True or False: Ken Livingstone, the former mayor of London, believes it is perfectly acceptable to blow up buses in Tel Aviv, but objects to those blowing up buses in England.

Question 6

True or False: The British lean over backward to grant freedom of speech to Muslim groups, even as they slander returning war heroes; but they also lean over backward to silence any critics of Islam.
