A year after a financial scandal rocked Seattle Public Schools, the two top officials fired in its aftermath have landed lucrative administrative jobs in high-profile school districts.
And despite the controversy that has followed former Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson to Michigan and her former chief financial officer Don Kennedy to Connecticut, they have the support of their new bosses, according to media reports.
Goodloe-Johnson is the top academic officer for the Education Achievement System, a newly established district focusing mostly on Detroit’s failing schools. It’s led by John Covington, a former Kansas City schools chief.
Kennedy is temporarily running business and facilities functions for Bridgeport Public Schools, a closely scrutinized district being led on an interim basis by Paul Vallas, who formerly served as superintendent in Chicago, Philadelphia and New Orleans.
There are two Americas.
No, I am not adopting occupy-style rhetoric that pits one group of Americans against another. What I am talking about is the fundamental difference between America’s entrepreneurial private sector and America’s cumbersome public sector.
Two quick anecdotes highlight the divide.
Last week, I had the opportunity to chat with an old friend who is in the private sector. He broke into the home building industry before the bubble burst, so he has seen the industry making record profits as well as businesses shuttering around him. And despite several tumultuous years, he worked hard, fought through adversity and climbed the ranks.
Rather casually, he mentioned the company was undertaking yet another round of modernization – an effort to improve inventory tracking at all of its warehouses, making it more accurate and much more efficient. It is just the latest in a series of moves by the company to become more efficient in everything from energy usage to work force management.

House Republicans Rollback Obama’s Pro-Union Regulations – Page 1 – Christopher Prandoni – Townhall Conservative
After a yearlong fight, House Republicans land a blow against the politicized National Mediation Board (NMB). After assuming office in 2009, President Obama appointed two pro-union members to the three member NMB, the federal agency that oversees union-employer relations in the transportation industry.
