The Ghost of Bertold Brecht and the Balkanization of America

Bertold Brecht’s name is now largely lost to history, but the idea expressed in the succinct question above remains as potent today as when he uttered it. Brecht, a self-made Marxist who was once investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) during the “Red Scare” era of the late 1940s and early 1950s, probably did not know a then-young Edward Kennedy or the other politicians who later devised the 1965 Immigration and Naturalization Act, and he did not live to see the eventual mass migration of immigrants, legal and illegal alike, into the U.S. after his death. We can only speculate on how Brecht would have viewed the rapidly-Balkanizing United States of the early 21st century, but it seems safe to conclude that the old Marxist would be astounded at its scope, scale and rapidity.

Children in Britain are being taught brutal Sharia law punishments, including how to hack off a criminal’s hand or foot.

So-called ‘weekend schools’ – which offer the hardline Saudi National Curriculum to Muslim children in the UK – also teach that the penalty for gay sex is execution and that ‘Zionists’ are plotting to take over the world for the Jews.

One set text book challenges youngsters to list the ‘reprehensible’ qualities of the Jews.

Another for six year-olds asks them to answer what happens to someone who dies who is not a believer in Islam. The answer being looked for is ‘hellfire’.

A BBC Panorama investigation, to be screened tonight, identified a network of more than 40 weekend schools teaching around 5,000 children, from age six to 18.

The schools are run under the umbrella of ‘Saudi Students Clubs and Schools in the UK and Ireland’.

DHS corrects report that overstated ICE deportations under Obama

Months after reporting that the number of illegal immigrants removed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement increased 47 percent during President Obama’s first year in office, the Department of Homeland Security on Monday corrected the record, saying the actual increase in those deported and “voluntary departures” was 5 percent.

The 387,790 illegal immigrants removed by ICE in fiscal 2009 was still a record, as cited in the department’s Fiscal Year 2009 Annual Financial Report, which was dated Nov. 16.

A DHS spokesman said the report erred by lumping together in the 2009 figure the number of illegal immigrants deported with those permitted to leave on their own power rather than being physically removed by ICE, an option called “voluntary departure.”

Including both categories, ICE removed 387,790 in illegal immigrants in the year ending Sept. 30, 2009, compared with 369,221 in 2008 — a 5 percent increase.

Counting only those deported by ICE, the total grew 13 percent, from 264,541 in 2008 to 298,401 in 2009.

In a statement, the department said, “We are working with the Chief Financial Officer to clarify this information.”

The error came to light Monday when grass-roots immigrant rights groups assailed President Obama’s immigration policies, calling his record on deportations harsher than that of his predecessor, George W. Bush.
