August 31, 2012FOOD - Global food prices have leapt by 10% in the month of July, raising fears of soaring prices for the planet's poorest, the World Bank has warned. The bank said that a U.S. heatwave and drought in parts of Eastern Europe were partly to blame for the rising costs. The price of key grains such as corn, wheat and soybean saw the most dramatic increases, described by the World Bank president as “historic.” The bank warned countries importing grains will be particularly vulnerable.

Combat Outpost (COP) Mizan , Zabul Province, Southern Afghanistan.

COP Mizan is a base around 80 km away from Qalat City in Zabul Province. There was a point a few years ago, when Mizan and it’s surrounding valley and villages were considered a success for ISAF and relatively safe. The Taliban seemed to have been driven out. However a Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (GIRoA) program to eradicate the poppies farmed there along with a resurgence in Taliban attacks and use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) on the only road route into the valley has effectively nullified any progress made.

August 30, 2012HEALTH - Almost half of tuberculosis patients who received prior treatment were resistant to a second-line drug, suggesting the deadly disease may become “virtually untreatable,” according to a new study. Among 1,278 patients who were resistant to two or more first-line tuberculosis drugs in Estonia, Latvia, Peru, Philippines, Russia, South Africa, South Korea and Thailand, 43.7 percent showed resistance to at least one second-line drug, according to a study led by Tracy Dalton at the U.S.
